Are you in the clouds now?

“Are you in the clouds now?” were slowly built up layer by layer, over many months. A result of slow intention, deep patience and intuition, these pieces are inspired by our connection to those we’ve loved and lost. A reminder that grief doesn’t have to go away but can be transformed into purpose, passion, and motivation. These pieces can serve as a reminder to think of those we’ve lost frolicking and dancing amongst the clouds..

The Inspiration behind ‘Are you in the Clouds Now?’

Some relationships don’t end when someone leaves. They simply change shape.

These two small paintings began as an exploration of joy: soft, abstract forms that felt almost like happiness suspended in clouds. But over time, they became connected to something much more personal: the strange way grief continues to evolve after loss.

Instead of journaling privately, these thoughts were recently being written as letters to a best friend who is no longer here. A way of continuing a conversation that, in another form, never really stopped.

On August 14th, the journal read:

“Dear Rosie,

I just finished these two small paintings I’ve been playing around with and building up for months. They look like abstract joy bottled up in clouds and they made me think of you.

Yesterday Chanelle told me something that stuck with me- that just because you’re not physically here anymore, it doesn’t mean our friendship disappears too. It just looks a little different now. I told her I missed your deep belly laughs and the way you always answered my phone calls in the same way for over a decade. I cried at that. It’s the little things that get to me now.

But today I’m feeling this sense you’re with me in the studio, I imagined you there asking inquisitive questions about what I was painting with curiosity and wonder.

I know grief never fully goes away, losing you isn’t something I can just move on from or get over. But maybe that grief can be transformed or alchemized into purpose, passion, and motivation to aim for all the things we talked about.

One day I’ll have that gallery and collective studio space we envisioned, I think I’ll call it ‘Rosie’s’.

I love you pal, let me know if you’re in the clouds now, ok?”

There is something universal in the experience of missing someone. The way an ordinary detail like a laugh, a familiar greeting, a memory that arrives unexpectedly can suddenly make someone feel close again.

Grief asks us to adjust our reality around an absence. But perhaps remembering can also become a way of making space for presence.

These paintings are an imagined place for that feeling: loved ones laughing, dancing and wandering among the clouds. A reminder that the people we lose can continue to shape who we become, what we create, and the dreams we carry forward.

And maybe they can hold something for anyone who has experienced loss, or for anyone who simply has someone, somewhere, they wish they could talk to one more time.

If these pieces evoke someone you love, let them be a reminder to imagine them somewhere soft and beautiful, still curious, still laughing, still with you in ways that look a little different now. ☁️
